Spruit Day recently took place at various points along the Braamfontein Spruit in an effort to clean up the area.
The colder weather did not stop volunteers from picking up rubbish and planting trees. Along with the volunteers, City Parks sent out teams to help assist in the cleaning and planting process.
Volunteers started early and within an hour, had already collected almost 15 bags of rubbish.
Spruit Day is an annual campaign in its third year that is organised by volunteers which had weekly meetings to co-ordinate this event. The campaign stretches along the whole Spruit and involves residents associations along the river. The campaign took six months to prepare to ensure that hundreds of people attend, and with help from 24/7 Security, CAP, Ghost Squad and ADT, with assistance from JMPD and City Parks who helped clear rubbish and donated trees.
During the day hundreds of bags of rubbish were removed from the sites. MTN made a donation at the Field & Study enabling new bins to be purchased and installed, and Spar fed the hungry volunteers by giving them boerewors rolls.
Matthew Butler, a volunteer, said he had found a few interesting things such as a broken computer keyboard and an old-style monitor.
Jessica Burnet, another volunteer said, “The City really needs to do something about the rubbish problem alongside the banks of the spruit.”
Members of Ghost Squad Security were also present and also got their hands dirty to help clean up the Spruit.
