T-junction dangers

MORNINGSIDE – A boundry wall was damged at a T-Junction when a SUV failed to stop.

The T-junction on the corner of Outspan and Benmore roads has become a problem for the homeowner after another vehicle crashed into his wall, resulting in a huge amount of financial expense.

The accident occurred on 10 September at around 4.30am when two people travelling in an SUV heading down Benmore Road, failed to stop. The driver smashed into the boundary wall of the property.

Brett Airey, the homeowner, said there was a male in the driver’s seat and a female passenger in the vehicle. “The airbags were deployed and I immediately called the emergency services,” he said.

Airey said the female passenger complained of burning in her abdomen and the male had some blood on him. They refused medical treatment and were arrested for alcohol blood-level testing. “I went to the Sandton Police Station the next day to get a case number and was informed that Sandton and Bramley police stations did not have alcohol testing kits.

“What scares me most is that people are out riding their bikes as early as 4.30am and don’t stand a chance.

“This is now our sixth wall strike in three years and there needs to be calming measures such as barriers or a traffic circle, put in place. We upgraded the wall because vehicles smashing through the wall are becoming a problem.”
