Dressing up for a cause

SANDTON – A special lunch was held to commemorate women and raise funds for underprivileged schoolgirls' sanitary towels.

A lady’s lunch was hosted at Browns restaurant, Rivonia, to commemorate brave and influential women.

The event was hosted by Sandton-based Marsh Africa, an insurance, broking and risk management company, and the women all dressed up for the 50s vintage chic-themed event.

The theme of the lady’s lunch was vintage chic and attendees all dressed up.

The company’s head of marketing and communications, Salma Kidd said, “This year is the 60th anniversary of the historic event which took place on 9 August 1956. Over 200 000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the extension of pass laws to women.”

She added that the aim of the event was to bring together female colleagues in corporate South Africa to reflect on how their own success could make a difference in developing young girls into future leaders of industry. Kidd highlighted that the women at the event should not only celebrate their own success, but also the achievements of the women who came before them.

Women gather at Browns Restaurant to commemorate other great South African women.

“[Other women] can inspire us to unlock our own strength and motivate us to make a difference in our communities and country.”

Also in attendance was Gerry Elsdon, who is a well-known media personality in South Africa and a volunteer for the Caring4Girls project.

This project is aimed at collecting sanitary towels for young underprivileged schoolgirls, and Marsh got on board and encouraged attendees at the event to donate sanitary towels.

Gerry Elsdon, a volunteer for Caring4Girls, was proud of the pile of donated sanitary towels.

Elsdon said, “We are trying to collect a mountain of sanitary towels for young girls [at this event] and the pile is getting quite big. Caring4Girls is always looking for talented volunteers who can help us out and we encourage all women to come forward and help.”
