Cultural cooking shown on digital platform

Craighall resident, 19-year-old Taynita Harilal, is expressing her insight and culture through food and is using the digital world to spread her messages.

Harilal explained that she launched an online cooking show, Bunnies in the Burbs. “This is a digital cooking show which takes the popular reality cooking format, but is more intimate and inspiring in that viewers will get to witness a young African millennial sharing good food and wisdom with her role models and peers.”

In one of the video clips she shared on her Instagram page, Harilal learns how to make traditional Indian cuisine from her grandmother.

She cooks in her family kitchen at home and the series of cooking shows has a homey, authentic feel. “The show features inspiring African trailblazers like the first black African woman to summit Mount Everest, Deshun Deysel; and social entrepreneur and executive director of Redefine Human Capital, Irisha Luhanga, to name a few.”

Harilal said that she is proud to have launched her own online TV show and she uses the hashtags #BunniesintheBurbs and #OurFamilyKitchen when sharing her content. “People want to know what the ‘born-free’ generation of South Africa is doing to take control of our own destiny.

“I think that we are all born to do something great and the challenge is whether [or not] we choose to embrace greatness and actively do something about it. I also think that quality is what separates those who achieve greatness.”

Her mother, Vanessa Perumal added, “As South Africa celebrates Women’s Month, Harilal’s Bunnies in the Burbs launch is especially significant and timely, given the African Union’s declaration of 2010 to 2020 as the African Women’s Decade.”

Harilal concluded, “Besides the excitement of the show, the food is really yum and, thankfully, all our guests so far keep on sharing the most delicious recipes.”
