UPDATE: Two suspects injured in N1 Rivonia shootout (VIDEO)

SANDTON - A shootout took place on the N1 North earlier this afternoon.

18 August – 3.58pm  – Emergency services and police are still on the scene of the shootout. Sandton Chronicle journalist Michael Butler is on the scene and will give updates as they come through.

EMER-G-MED spokesperson Max Cohen said, “Motorists can expect HEAVY DELAYS on the N1 North and South between Rivonia and the Buccleuch Interchange for most of the afternoon, due to ongoing police investigations.”

Update 18 August – 3pm – Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubela confirmed that there was a shootout between police and suspects.

Makhubela added that he cannot confirm any other details at this moment.

Four lanes have been closed on the N1 North between Rivonia Road and the Buccleuch interchange following the shootout.

Spokesperson for EMER-G-MED Max Cohen said, “At this stage I’ve been told that two suspects have been shot.”

Cohen added, “Police were chasing suspects that were involved in an armed robbery. On the highway there was a shoot-out between the police and suspects.”

It has been confirmed that one of the suspects is being treated for serious injuries while the other suffered minor injuries.

Initial report:

There have been reports of a shootout on the N1 North before the Rivonia off ramp.

EMER-G-MED are currently at the scene to treat the injured. It is believed that there was a high speed chase between police and hijackers.

Further details remain unclear at this stage, however, updates will follow as more information becomes available.
