670 scarves warm bodies and hearts

SANDTON - More than 670 scarves were handed out to the cold and needy on the streets of Sandton.

The less fortunate were treated to a warm surprise on 10 August when Caroline Steyn and her team of KnitWits descended on the corner of William Nicol and Sandton drives armed with bags filled with scarves.

Founder of 67 Blankets, Steyn was present to hand out more than 670 scarves that were knitted by her team of caring KnitWits.

“We hope to capture the imagination and hearts of many thousands of people who will be kept a little bit warmer in the name of our beloved Madiba, and with the cold front over the country, it’s an opportune time to be spreading brightness, love and warmth,” said Steyn, who saw the idea in the US and thought it would work well here.

Sandton Drive took on all the colours of the rainbow as a dedicated team of volunteers set out to work tying scarves around trees, poles and lamp posts with a note saying, ‘I am not lost. If you are cold and need me, please take me. With love from 67 Blankets’.

One lucky recipient told the Sandton Chronicle that this simple gesture would make a big difference. “I don’t have much. This scarf will keep me warmer tonight.”
