Unroadworthy minibus taxis cause concern

RIVONIA - Resident questions how safe it is to drive in a minibus taxi...

According to a concerned resident, Keith Goldman, minibus taxis which queue on the corner of 12th Avenue and Rietfontein Road in Rivonia appear to be unroadworthy.

“I find it quite distressing that unsuspecting commuters get into these taxis and I wonder why the authorities turn a blind eye,” said Goldman.

He added that he walks past these taxis every afternoon. “Many of the vehicles have cracked windscreens, broken seats, broken tail lights, damaged doors and smooth tyres,” he said.

Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for Metro Police said, “As set out in the National Road Traffic Act and as per [vehicle] manufacturers’ standards, things such as tyres, brakes, lights and windscreen should all be in working order.

“Minibus taxis have to undergo a roadworthy test once a year. They cannot renew their licence if no roadworthy [certificate] exists.”

He said that unroadworthy taxis are taken off the road, but taxi owners find a way to continue driving these unsafe vehicles.
