An American in Jozi: Part 2

SANDTON — Campbell discusses her visit to the Asha Trust and her struggle with writing an article about it.

Another week has gone by and I ask myself where it has gone because it went so quickly …

This week has seen me get a little more comfortable in my duties for the Sandton Chronicle. I worked with more press releases and attended a couple of events.

My favourite event this week, and indeed that I have covered in my time here, was when I went with the Asha Trust to visit Bernard Fehon, founder of the CEO SleepOut. I enjoyed talking with a man whose charitable idea has now become an international project. I also particularly enjoyed visiting the daycare centres the trust has developed, as well as seeing all the children at those centres.

When I came back to write my article on the event, I found that I had difficulty. I had pages of notes about what it was like to participate in the CEO SleepOut from Fehon; and I wished to write that I thought that the Asha Trust centres embody what I’ve seen to be a South African value –that you take care of your neighbours.

However, when you are limited to only 300 words, you can only include so much information and so many quotes.

This kind of experience did serve to make me a better writer, though. It taught me to exclude what I really enjoyed and, instead, made me stick to the basic facts that I knew would explain the event and the purpose of it most clearly.

I am looking forward to continuing my work here and learning more about the different aspects that go into making this community newspaper function week after week – as well as the people who make this newspaper a reality.
