WATCH: Busted for illegal dumping

SANDTON – A resident caught men dumping building rubble illegally and notified the authorities.

Metro police spokesperson, Edna Mamonyane, has repeatedly asked residents to report illegal dumping to Metro’s bylaws department.

In the article, Report illegal dumping, Mamonyane highlighted that for Metro police to alleviate the issue of illegal dumping, the assistance of residents was needed.

Ward 102 councillor, David Potter explained how a resident was able to assist in stopping illegal dumping in Sandton.

Potter said, “A small bakkie was caught illegally dumping in the City Power servitude between the suburbs of Bordeaux and Willowild by a passing motorist.” According to Potter, the motorist blocked the small entrance and this prevented the illegal dumper from leaving the scene.

“Ghost Security and Metro police were called to the scene. The illegal dumper was issued with a fine and was requested to remove the illegal dumping. This servitude has been an issue for a number of years,” he said.

Potter stressed that although City Power had installed a barrier along the border of servitude to prevent illegal dumping, a small gate had been left open to allow vehicles in and out of the property.

“This opening is necessary because there needs to be access to this piece of servitude to let grass cutting take place, emergency vehicles in and out as well as allow Eskom to service their oil-filled cables laid under the servitude,” said Potter.

“However, two bundles of barbed wire have also been placed at the entrance to prevent illegal access and further illegal dumping.”

He added that areas that were prone to illegal dumping in Sandton needed to be secured urgently to prevent further wasteful expenditure incurred in removing the rubble.

Mamonyane explained the process that needed to be followed when a resident witnessed illegal dumping.

“Matters of this nature are reported to Zed Mangaliso of the Metro bylaws department. Videos and photographs which show the number plate and identity of the guilty party can be sent via Whatsapp.”
