Taxi rank concerns ward councillor

SANDTON – Ward 103 councillor, Vincent Earp believes that a taxi rank on William Nicol Drive needs to be removed.

A taxi rank situated on William Nicol Drive in Bryanston has become of great concern for Ward 103 councillor, Vincent Earp.

Earp said, “This taxi rank is not legal and there should not be more than three taxis here at a time. But there are often more than 30 taxis here at any given moment.”

He further highlighted an environmental issue which has arisen with this taxi rank. “There is an excessive amount of litter around the area. The taxi drivers repair their vehicles over here and leave all of the rubbish behind. You will see brake pads and other car parts lying around here that have not been cleaned up.

“There are also people here selling food and they should also not be permitted to sell their goods here.”

According to Earp, the City’s bylaws should be obeyed at all times and this taxi rank and the excessive amount of littering shows a flagrant disregard for the bylaws. “It is also so unfair for the people living across the road as this place is not looked after with all of this filth. We are in danger of living in a lawless society.”

Earp said that he had been in contact with Metro police in order to find a solution to this problem.

Metro police spokesperson, Edna Mamonyane said, “A resident has already complained about this taxi rank. I have alerted the commander in that area and he is checking it out.

“He will be attending to this issue and will find out why those taxis are in that area. The aim is to allocate these taxis to another taxi rank so they can continue their work.”

Earp concluded, “We need to work with law enforcers to ensure that our streets are safe and laws are followed.”
