Memorial service for renowned racing car driver, Gugu Zulu
KYALAMI – A good husband, father, son and friend were the tributes paid to Gugu Zulu at Kyalami Racing Circuit.
Grieving family and friends gathered at Kyalami Racing Circuit as they paid tribute to racing car driver legend, Gugu Zulu on 26 July.
The memorial service was to remember the life of Zulu who died on 18 July while attempting to summit Mount Kilimanjaro as part of raising awareness for schoolgirls who miss 50 days of school a year due to the lack of sanitary towels.
In a moving tribute, Andre Ross, a friend of Zulu said, “Gugu told me a few months ago that if something happened to him, I must make sure his daughter, Lelethu, is well taken care of. Now that my friend is gone, I have a duty to look after my one-year-old goddaughter.”
Zulu won numerous local racing titles and was a presenter of the SABC motoring show Car Torque. He was also an advanced driving instructor for Volkswagen, Audi and BMW.
An emotional Ross added, “Gugu and I met five years ago at a bicycle race and we hit it off immediately. Our friendship developed from there, as I was honoured to be a groomsman at his wedding. I am still struggling to come to terms with the fact that I won’t see him again… I am going to miss him.”

Other speakers pointed out that Zulu was always chasing his dreams as he was seen as a motivated and determined individual. They also shared that Zulu was invested in touching the lives of young people, as he spent most of his time with the children of Diepsloot’s motorbike academy called the Jala Pelo Foundation.
In her tribute, Zulu’s wife’s friend, Letsehgo, said, “I keep thinking that this is all a dream, but I realise it’s too long for it to be a dream.” She also mentioned that Zulu wanted to make sure that she was safe before he let go of her in his final moments.
Government officials, Zulu’s celebrity friends and members of the media were also present at the memorial.
Zulu will be laid to rest in Westpark Cemetery on 28 July after a funeral service at Rhema Bible Church in Randburg.
