Stay off your cellphone when driving

SANDTON – Sandton police officers plead with motorists to remain vigilant when driving on the road and to not use their cellphones when stopped at an intersection.

Following a series of smash-and-grab incidents which were reported in the beginning of July, Sandton police are urging motorists to remain vigilant when driving or stopping at the Jan Smuts Avenue and Republic Road intersection.

Spokesperson for Sandton Police Station, Warrant officer Moses Maphakela said that drivers should be more aware of what is happening around them when behind the wheel.

He said that many smash-and-grab incidents at the intersection occur during bumper-to-bumper traffic and when drivers are busy on their cellphones.

He added, “When you are on your cellphone, you don’t know what is happening around you. We are calling on the public to pay attention to the individuals roaming around your car as criminals will take a chance at a smash-and-grab robbery if they notice you’re not paying attention.”
