UPDATE: Motorcyclist dies following William Nicol shootout

SANDTON - The motorcyclist injured during the shootout on the corner of William Nicol Drive and Republic Road has died.

UPDATE 21 July 2016, 10pm – Following the dramatic high speed chase and shootout on William Nicol Drive earlier today, the motorcyclist who was injured during the fatal shooting has succumbed to his wounds and died this evening.

A family friend messaged the Sandton Chronicle Facebook page, requesting that the video to be removed of the aftermath of the shooting, stating that the motorcyclist has died.

David Potter confirmed that the motorcyclist died as well, after receiving a message from a local community group.

The Sandton Chronicle has decided to remove the video out of respect for the family, however, is in possession of more videos of the aftermath of the shootout and will be added to the article.

UPDATE: 21 July, 5pm – Provincial spokesperson for the police Lieutenant Colonel Tsekiso Mofokeng said that a high speed chase ensued after the suspects noticed they were being followed by the police.

Mofokeng said that the suspects vehicle collided with two cars and a motorbike, which caused the vehicle to flip over. Three of the suspects got out of the car and began shooting at the police who returned fire.

Two of the shootout suspects were left critically injured following their shoot out and are currently in police custody while in the hospital while one suspect was killed in the shoot out.

Mofokeng added that one other suspect fled the scene on foot and is still at large. The police are currently searching for the fourth suspect.

Two unlicensed firearms were recovered from the scene.

Cohen added, “We are on the scene. It was a suspect vehicle who was fleeing from the police. They collided with four other vehicles, as well as a motorbike. One suspect was shot dead, two other suspects were shot and are critically injured. Third subject sustained moderate injuries.”

Cohen said that the motorcyclist who was involved in the collision is currently on a ventilator and Emer-g-med is currently waiting for a helicopter to arrive to transport the biker.

Motorists are urged to avoid the Republic Road and William Nicol Drive intersection.

 

21 July 1.09pm

According to a member of the Parkmore Community Association, Kate Wardle, there has been an alleged shootout between the police and suspected armed robbers near Pick n Pay on William Nicol in Bryanston.

As yet, spokesperson for the Sandton police warrant officer Moses Maphakela said that he does not know anything about it.

However, spokesperson for Emer-g-med, Max Cohen has confirmed that a shootout has occurred. He said, “We are on scene and, at the moment, we have two critically injured suspects.”

Ward councillor of ward 102 David Potter that the Republic Road on the way to William Nicol in closed. He confirmed emergency services and the police are on the scene.
