Sarmies for Mandela Day

SANDTON - Old Mutual employees package and distribute food for Mandela Day.

It’s all about food on Mandela Day.

Old Mutual’s employees, in partnership with Foodbank SA, packed and distributed food parcels and sandwiches to early development centres, night shelters and other communities in need on Mandela Day.

Two of Old Mutual’s main offices, Mutual Park in Cape Town and Mutual Square in Johannesburg, joined together in an effort to meet a goal of preparing 6 000 sandwiches to distribute.

The company said it believes in encouraging its employees to participate in community service and donate portions of monthly earnings to charities.

According to Old Mutual, 30 to 35 percent of its employees participated in one form of volunteerism or another.

“As a responsible business, we recognise our role in society to uplift and support the communities in which we operate,” said Millicent Maroga, head of the Old Mutual Foundation.

“We know by empowering people, cultivating communities and building a nation, we can ensure our nation’s future success and security. Our company and employees continue to be motivated by the hope and resilience of the communities we support.

“We encourage all South Africans to be inspired by Mandela Day and help move our nation forward as the great man himself did.”
