Making heavy hearts a little lighter

SANDTON – Reach for a Dream, a non-profit organisation, made the dreams of families come true.

The Reach for a Dream Foundation, which conducts charitable work all over South Africa, including Sandton, organised a day of pampering for those who need it most.

The non-profit organisation funds the dreams of children who are suffering from illnesses such as cancer, cystic fibrosis and life-threatening heart conditions.

Tammy-Kay van Rensburg, national marketing co-ordinator of the foundation said, “Nothing can be more heart-wrenching than knowing a child has been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Reach For A Dream knows it cannot make children better, but it can provide some hope, inspiration and joy by fulfilling a dream and creating delightful memories for ill children.”

She added that Reach For A Dream was proud to host a special Family Focus event with Mangwanani African Spa in Hartbeespoort recently. “The spa put together a wonderful half-day spa package for the families [affected by the illnesses of their children] to enjoy, along with a scrumptious breakfast and lunch. The families were treated to foot, neck, shoulder and hand massages.”

Van Rensburg stressed that from the moment a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, the dynamics within a family change. “They are suddenly immersed into a world that revolves around hospitals, doctors and medical procedures.

“For this reason, the foundation created their Family Focus programme to give families an opportunity to rebuild their relationships and meet other families facing similar challenges.” The programme provides opportunities for each family to spend quality time together, where illnesses and worries are forgotten and new friendships are made.

Van Rensburg concluded, “The impact of an illness on a family means that any leisure activities, including holidays, are beyond their reach.”
