SPCA needs your help

SANDTON – The Sandton SPCA is running a mobile clinic and needs the generous help of the community.

The Sandton SPCA needs the help of the community for their mobile clinic.

Lee-Ann Shepherd, the Sandton SPCA’s public relations and fundraising manager said, “The mobile clinic was launched in February 2010. The clinic is run from a Nissan Interstar panel van which has been converted into a functioning mobile clinic for animals.

“The clinic has holding pens and an onboard refrigerator to house sensitive medication.” She added that the van housed examination counters and storage areas for all the equipment needed to provide basic veterinary care.

The next mobile clinic will be run on 30 July in the Marlboro Gardens area. “We will be offering basic vet services – for example deworming, vaccinations and spraying for [fleas].”

Sheperd stressed that the help of the community was needed to make this clinic a success. “What we require from the public are donations.

“Monetary donations will be contributed towards running costs like the medication. We desperately need dog food. There are not many cats in these communities, so dog food would be preferable.

“We would also like donations of collars and leads to be handed to patrons who don’t have their own.”

She explained that the key objective of the mobile clinic was to offer animal care services to low-income persons, families and pet owners who have no means of transport and are unable to afford veterinary care. Another objective was to provide mobile and qualified education to the community on animal welfare.

“Our staff and volunteers provide education to the public on how to care for their dogs and cats through engagement, printed handouts and demonstrations.”

The SPCA aims to curb the problem of unwanted animals and encourages people to sterilise their animals.

Sheperd said, “We visit Alexandra township and Hillbrow schools to host a mobile clinic day. Each class is visited before the mobile clinic day to promote and explain the importance of the event. Dog owners throughout the community are invited to bring their dogs for de-worming, spraying against parasites and vaccinations.

“These events require the support of many volunteers and provide an opportunity for friends, work groups and other NGOs to engage with our community.”

She concluded that the SPCA was proud to have reached 1 228 community members last year through their mobile clinic programme.
