Attempted hijacking ends in shootout

SUNNINGHILL – Three men attempted to hijack a bakkie on the corner of Rivonia and Naivasha roads in Sunninghill.

At around 1.30pm on 4 July, Emer-G-Med personnel responded to reports of a shootout on the corner of Rivonia and Naivasha roads in Sunninghill.

Reports indicate that three suspects attempted to hijack a bakkie using a toy gun. The driver of the vehicle opened fire on the suspects with his personal firearm, shooting one of them in the leg.

The hijackers attempted to flee on foot, however, members of the public managed to subdue the injured suspect until police arrived.

The injured suspect was transported by provincial services to a nearby hospital under police guard.

Unfortunately, the two remaining suspects managed to escape. The South African Police Services were on the scene to investigate further.

Gary Nicolau, an eyewitness to the incident stated that the suspect was shot in leg after pulling a fake gun out. “The victim of the attempted hijacking and an old man who tried to help out were bitten on the arm while trying to sustain the criminal.”

Nicolau added that the gun was nearly turned around and pulled on the victim during the fight.
