WATCH: Expect traffic delays in Sandton due to peaceful demonstration

SANDTON – A demonstration will be taking place on the corner of West Street and Fredman Drive from 2pm to 3.30pm and motorists are urged to avoid the area.

The U.S. Diplomatic Mission to South African released a statement informing the public of a peaceful demonstration that is set to start at 2pm to 3.30pm on 1 July.

At least 400 people will be demonstrating with the stated purpose of protesting against Israel.

Police are currently on the scene to maintain control. However, motorists are urged to take alternative routes through the area to avoid being caught in any traffic congestion.

A Sandton Chronicle journalist is on the scene and has reported that the demonstrators seem to be setting up closer to the corner of Grayston Drive and West Street.

According to Sandton Chronicle journalist Michael Butler, the demonstration nearly got out of hand when a passing pedestrian grabbed one of the protesters flags and called them terrorists.

This is a developing story. Updates will be published as they are received.
