Pastor Andre Olivier from the Morningside Rivers Church has expressed remorse through a Twitter apology on 29 June for his sermon made in front of his congregation on 26 June.
Olivier’s apology follows a great deal of criticism in the media regarding his sermon which many have deemed racist and insensitive. His sermon entitled “Overcoming abandonment”, touched on the issue of abandonment and how religion might help someone through difficult situations. He said in an interview with Talk Radio 702 presenter Xolani Gwala on 27 June that he preached that white people have got things because they worked for it.
In the interview he added, “I think sensitive hearts have taken this completely out of context, saying I’m a privileged white and that I think people are lazy, I never said that at all. I’m here to build into South Africa.”
Many congregants and individuals condemned his sermon and his comments made in the following interview:
Spare a thought for the blacks at #RiversChurch who work hard & manage to tithe, then Ps André Olivier turns around& calls them lazy
