Finally, an improvement in George Lea Park

SANDTON – The piles of building rubble in George Lea Park (south) are finally diminishing instead of mushrooming.

Finally, there is some good news for George Lea Park (south) regarding the piles of building rubble littering the park and although some remained, a lot of it has been removed.

It is evident that a clean-up was done over the weekend but it is unclear who was responsible for removing some of the rubble.

In the article, Report illegal dumping, the issue of illegal dumping in the park was reported and residents were urged to report illegal dumping to Metro police or the Sandton Chronicle.

On 27 June, when a Sandton Chronicle journalist drove past the park, it was clear that the piles of rubble had diminished significantly. Metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said she was unaware of this clean-up and said she would find out whether Metro authorities had been involved.

There is, however, still a pile of rubble beneath a tree in the park and this pile has been visible since March.

Mamonyane is still urging all residents to be proactive and report illegal dumping to the Metro bylaws department. “Photographs showing the identity of the building companies responsible for the dumping can be sent via WhatsApp to Zed Mangaliso of the Metro bylaws department,” she said.

Lori Klein, who is a lower Sandhurst resident and the administrator for her area said, “There is a specific process that these building companies need to follow when dumping. They should dump at designated depots. Upon arrival at the depot [truck drivers] should receive a form which is then signed on the way out and this serves as proof that the dumping was done at the depot by the builders.”
