Chat group talks to the birds

BROADACRES - The Explores Chat Group celebrated their first birthday at the Buitengeluk Conference Centre.

The Explorers Interest and Friendship group began in April last year as a non-profit, community-building initiative.

The aim of the group is to gather friends together on the third Friday morning of every month at different venues, with guest speakers providing information on different subjects.

The Explore Chat Group was very fortunate to be hosted by Broadacres Spar and have Pat Tarr, managing director and co-owner of Broadacres Super-Spar, Hobart Spar, Ferndale Spar and Crowthorne Spar as their keynote speaker, at their meeting on 20 June. This was held at Buitengeluk Wedding and Conference Centre, located behind the Broadacres Spar.

Tarr spoke of her early days in South Africa, after losing their farm in Zimbabwe. From her retail beginnings in a corner shop in Alberton she, with her family, opened Jukskei Park Spar in 1993.

Pineslopes Spar followed in 1998. The opening of Broadacres Super-Spar followed in 2001, Hobart Spar in 2011, Ferndale Spar in 2013 and at the end of last year, Crowthorne Spar.

Kobus Theunissen, ornithologist and second speaker at the meeting, very amusingly talked about ducks and geese. Theunissen, an ex-university lecturer, physiologist and entomologist also discussed the various bird sanctuaries in and around Johannesburg.

All who attended the meeting agreed that they enjoyed a spectacular morning together and developed new friendships.

The next Explore Chat Group meeting will be held on 15 July in Bryanston and those who attend will hear about the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa. This will be followed by a discussion on super foods and then a demonstration of delicious recipes with kale by Cammy van Rensburg of The Bryanston Organic Market.

All visitors are welcome.
