Know the art in your city

JOHANNESBURG – Get to know your city through its art.

The city can be a daunting place to explore, but City Buzz is making it a little more fun to know your surroundings in Johannesburg.

With the number of reported crimes that take place, numerous taxis taking over the roads and thousands of people passing through the streets each day, it can all be quite overwhelming.

But it need not overwhelm you any longer because the interesting art that can be found throughout the city can be your guide.

These public art pieces can be found in the most artistically rich part of the city.

According to City of Joburg, (www.joburg.org.za) the building outside of which these carvings are placed, is one that you wouldn’t usually associate with art, when in actual fact they are one of the biggest collectors of art locally.

In order to beautify the city, this company commissioned a number of artists to work together on creating a unified look and feel throughout the four buildings that make up the headquarters of the company in Johannesburg.

These major artworks that came as a result of the commissioned artist’s talents created a cornerstone of art for the buildings and prompted the company to also build an art gallery within the walls of their establishment.

Where could this be?

On the corner of Eloff and Main streets is where the beautiful carvings, representative of Johannesburg City, can be found – and this is also the location of the Absa Towers for which the art pieces were specifically made.

Inside the north tower is where the art gallery and architectural splendour can be seen, and outside is where a number of pieces can be found, including a mural by Karel Nel, entitled Place of Nurture.

With all the superb local art at Absa Towers, a visit to the bank could actually make you forget your financial woes and appreciate all the superb pieces.
