New take on old tale

SANDTON – To celebrate its 75-year jubilee, St Davids Marist Inanda presented The Prodigal Son with St Teresa's School.

As part of their 75-year anniversary celebrations, St Davids Marist Inanda put on a production, The Prodigal Son, with St Teresa’s School in Rosebank.

The director of the production, Jaco Ferreira said, “Preparing for a major production is always an interesting process and this year it has been doubly so. After all, jubilees only come around once every 75 years.”

Ferreira highlighted that this production shows the power of family. He explained that the school dealt with the story in an original manner. “Although the basic narrative is still recognisable, we have dealt with it quite freely.”

He explained that the school values their partnership with St Teresa’s. “This partnership now spans 15 years. The participation of the girls adds value to the production each year,” concluded Ferreira.

It told a historical story and included contemporary music by songstresses Ariana Grande, Jessie J and Nicki Minaj.

The lead role of Jaron was played by Kyle Abernethy, who received excited applause from the audience after singing the song, Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked.

Music director, Chris Luke, referred to the musical component of the production as a creative but inspired process. The school’s band and chamber choir played an important role.

As a part of the jubilee production, the St Davids’ high school and preparatory schools also came together. The preparatory school’s director, Susanne Human said, “Our prep school boys were very keen to be a part of the jubilee production and many boys came to audition… We combined high school and prep school boys for the first time.”
