Present yourself well online

JOHANNESBURG – You are a brand. Whether you like it or not, people see what you put out there.

A specialist for marketing company, Tembisa On Record, believes that how you present yourself, especially online, is very important.

Ngwako Serepe explained that often people make the mistake of thinking that online profiles do not matter, and many have been badly burned. “Believe it or not, wherever you have sent a curriculum vitae or a business proposal, your online profiles were perused. The idea is to present yourself in a way that will get you noticed for the right reasons.”

Serepe uses socialite and actress, Khanyi Mbau’s past to stress how she made a turn-around, in spite of her personal life being plastered online. He stated,”Critics hinted that Khanyi Mbau’s lifestyle is damaging her brand as an actress, but she didn’t see anything wrong, it seemed. Khanyi went from being a queen of former big spender, Mandla Mthembu’s castle, to being businessman Theunis Crous’ alleged mistress.

“But, today, Mbau’s brand is nothing near to her old ways. With a reality TV show under her belt and her journey as an actress, she is paving a new presence for herself online, even though the old one is still a click away.”

He emphasised the following points:

  • Package yourself accordingly as an authentic brand. Personal brands are driven by one’s unique personality.
  •  Avoid being all over the place, have a structured approach. Remember, a solid brand strategy is important. Just like with any packaged deal, if a brand is not managed and marketed properly to the right people using the right mediums, it will fizzle out really quickly.
  • Never engage in unnecessary arguments offline and online.
  • No brand was built overnight, be patient.
  • Daily you are your brand, never forget that but perfect it.
