Window washers anger resident
SANDTON – A Strathhaven resident has strong views on both window washers and Metro police.
After reading the Sandton Chronicle article, An ongoing problem, Week ending 3 June, a Strathhaven resident felt compelled to express his views on the window washer saga.
The resident, who wished to remain anonymous given the nature of his comments, said, “Window washers are getting more aggressive and pushy with ladies that are vulnerable targets and easily intimidated. About six months ago two ladies who refused to give money to these aggressive washers on the corner of Daisy and Grayston roads had their windscreen wiper blades pulled right off. I have pictures of this.”
The resident said that he also has pictures of a Metro police car’s windows being washed on the corner of Daisy Road and Grayston Drive in Sandton. “This car was being used to fetch family and friends instead of for proper Metro policing duties,” claimed the resident.
He feels that Metro police need to ‘pull their socks up and do something about this’. “Metro [police] even tell us that it’s acceptable to be a window washer so when you phone through to them, [they] do anything to negate the call,” said the resident.
Metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane responded to the following comments by saying, “Metro [police] have always asked the public to get involved and report any issues involving window washers. All pictures need to be sent to the anti-corruption hotline. I honestly do not believe that a Metro police vehicle would allow a window washer to wash their window as Metro [police] are fully committed to stopping the issue of the window washers. Metro [police] are fighting this issue and we often take window washers to the police.”
She further explained that Metro police officers have been successful in combating the issue in the Johannesburg North areas such as on Grayston Drive.
The resident concluded, “… When City Mayor Rudolf Giuliani… took over a crime-ridden New York, the first thing he did was remove all the window washers. He said that no lady in his city will be intimidated one more day. Giuliani was very successful.”
