Over a century and still going strong

ILLOVO – The Wanderers Club offers multiple sporting activities in the heart of Illovo.

The Wanderers Club, situated at 21 North Street in Illovo, was established in 1888 and has built on its status and heritage to become the country’s foremost club, and the honours boards in the main clubhouse can attest to notable club members and their achievements.

In the scenic northern suburbs of Johannesburg, today’s Wanderers offers sportsmen and women playing fields, courts and greens without equal in the city, restaurants and pubs for enjoyable leisure hours, and banquet halls and conference rooms for functions large or small.

“The Wanderers Club is a green lung in an ever-growing city and its sustainability is of tantamount importance so that its legacy of preserving and enjoying sport and giving members the opportunity to belong is carried forward to future generations,” said Bruce Burt, chairperson of the club.

“We have recently obtained a 4-Star grading from the Tourism Board and we are in the process of upgrading some of our function rooms and the Spinners Bar in order to provide state-of-the-art banqueting and sporting facilities to our members and guests.”

Burt added that the club catered for special functions such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, monthly markets and Urban Foodie functions where participants can enjoy food and wine pairings.

“One of our goals is to attract more families with children as that will ensure the future of the club. Our junior membership of up to 17 years old is the largest category because of children’s keen participation in hockey, gymnastics, rugby, cricket, soccer and karate – and due to great coaching and wonderful facilities,” said Burt.

At present, the club has about 5 000 members and has a number of world-class sporting facilities such as floodlit athletics, rugby and cricket fields, badminton, bowls and basketball courts, and recreational facilities for young and old.
