Hilton Sandton inspires youth

SANDTON - The Hilton Sandton opened it's doors to young high school pupils for Careers@Hilton Live.

To educate and open doors for young high school pupils, the Hilton Sandton hosted Careers@Hilton Live which forms part of the hospitality giant’s global Youth in Hospitality Month.

Spokesperson for the Hilton Hotel, Raquel De Canha said, “Throughout the month of May, Hilton’s portfolio of hotels and corporate offices around the globe are hosting events to inform those looking for employment about the exciting and diverse career opportunities in the hospitality industry.”

The event is part of the company’s ‘open doors’ commitment, which aims to positively impact at least one million young people by 2019. The event was attended by pupils from numerous schools and they were given the opportunity to interact with different people in the hospitality industry who spoke to them about the industry’s various benefits.

The event was attended by more than 300 pupils from various FET colleges along with special guests such as South African Minister of Tourism, Derek Hanekom.

He said, “Tourism has truly become an immensely valuable treasure chest for our people. We are proud to support Hilton on this initiative as we share the common goal of building South Africa’s workforce.”

Area vice president for operations in Africa and Indian Ocean at Hilton Worldwide, Jan van der Putten said, “Young people are the biggest demographic in the world today and are faced with serious employment and career-building challenges. There is a growing disconnect between the skills companies seek in employees and those which young people are equipped with when entering the workforce.

“Our youth strategy focuses on connecting, preparing and employing young people around the world and enabling us to positively impact employment levels in the country.”
