Calling all animal lovers for assistance

SANDTON - The Sandton SPCA is looking for an array of volunteers to assist them in changing the lives of the animals that they care for.

Lee-Ann Shepherd, public relations and fundraising manager for Sandton SPCA, is urging all residents to consider volunteer work at the SPCA.

From graphic designers to IT specialists to entrepreneurs, the Sandton SPCA is also desperately seeking the time and assistance of all qualified professionals.

“I have noticed that when people engage with the animals, it brings a lot of meaning to their lives. Especially those who walk with the animals and interact with them personally. The bonding that they do with the animals is very touching for these people,” said Shepherd.

She did, however, explain that there is a range of opportunities for those who want to contribute but do not want to have direct interaction with the animals for personal reasons. “I understand that many people may not be able to play with the animals, walk them or interact with them directly as this is potentially too sad and emotional for them. However, animal lovers can still volunteer their services in many other areas. For example, a graphic designer could help us plan and advertise a few of our up-and-coming fundraisers.”

She went on to explain that the SPCA needs an IT specialist to assist with the data capturing of the personal information of donors and volunteers. Furthermore, the organisation is looking for a handyman that can work on their grounds.

“We are looking for hosts who can assist visitors with meet-and-greet sessions. They will also assist us in communication with visitors and donors. One of the most important things is fundraising and we need assistance from any individuals who have fundraising skills and expertise,” explained Shepherd.

Experienced businessmen and women can also get involved by helping the SPCA with the conceptualisation of ideas, organising and planning. In the age of rapidly progressing technology, Shepherd said that technologically-savvy animal-lovers can help the organisation with the development of a new SPCA app for Smartphones.

“It is important to remember that all of the money raised goes to the animals for rescue, treatment and education.”
