Cubs receive highest honour

JOHANNESBURG – Cubs are awarded the Leaping Wolf badge.

James Stobart and Jordan Boyd were presented with their Leaping Wolf badges.

The Leaping Wolf is the highest award a Cub can earn and must be completed before their 11th birthday when they move up to the Scout troop.

To earn this prestigious award, both boys had to complete a number of special projects. This included planning and carrying out a greening project to highlight the importance of the environment. The Cubs also had to select a topical global issue such as poverty, conservation or water pollution, and find out what could be done about it and then do something practical to help. They were also challenged to find out about a technology of their choice, and then present their findings to the rest of the children in the Cub pack.

Gary Pienaar, adult leader of the 1st Bryanston Group said, “The completion of this award takes significant personal effort, discipline and self-motivation.” He added that this was a personal challenge that the Cubs work on independently of the structured programme and this starts to develop basic planning and leadership skills.

Scouting is an outdoor-based educational programme which aims to equip young people with the skills and self-confidence to become future leaders in our communities. Membership is open to both boys and girls.
