Samsung celebrates new graduates

JOHANNESBURG - Samsung congratulates their first batch of graduates who completed the Samsung Women Technical Programme.

At a graduation ceremony in Bryanston on 5 May, the Samsung team expressed great pride in 16 students who graduated from their Samsung Women Technical Programme.

The programme, which ran from June to December last year, focuses on training women in the technical and electronics repair field. The company held its graduation ceremony for their first batch of 16 graduates who received certificates for their achievements and will be employed at various Samsung Service Centres and other organisations in its partner network.

“Our goal at Samsung is to help alleviate unemployment by providing the necessary tools to empower our youth. With the Samsung Women Technical Programme we hope to contribute positively to society by making technical training accessible to women. We hope that this will translate into a new generation of high calibre women technicians in the country,” said Richard Chetty, service director at Samsung Electronics South Africa.

“The Samsung Women Technical Programme is an initiative which underscores Samsung’s commitment to bridging the skills gap in South Africa. The more empowered our society becomes, the better it is for our socio-economic wellbeing and global competitiveness.”

Graduate and 22-year-old Tembisa resident, Nosipho Majola said, “My experience of the programme was difficult at first, but it was a great learning curve. It was definitely a good opportunity and I am grateful.”

Commenting on the opportunity that she and her classmates received, Majola added, “As women, we had to work twice as hard to prove our skills. But when we are at the Samsung Service Centres, we are technicians first before we are women. I look forward to helping my mother with our finances and creating a better life for us.”

Nonhlanhla Mokhari from Phola Park, who was the top student in her class said, “I feel blessed to have gone through this initiative as it refreshed my skills on some of the things I learned at the Samsung Engineering Academy. I am confident and feel well-equipped to work on handheld devices.”
