A masterpiece a day

Sandton - Sandton-based teacher, Danielle Khoury has set a unique challenge for herself and is doing a piece of art every day for 365 days.

Sandton-based art teacher, Danielle Khoury, has set an art challenge for herself.

As a part of this challenge, she is going to put pen, pencil or paint to paper for exactly 365 days and is determined to produce 365 pieces of art by the end of this year. As an art teacher, she has limited time to focus on her own work and started this project as a way of expressing her own artwork.

Khoury said, “I started the 365-day challenge as an offshoot of something called Inktober during the month of October 2015. This was a social media challenge which called on artists to draw or paint something every day during the month of October and post their work onto some kind of platform with the tag #inktober.”

She added that her commitment to Inktober came as a surprise. “I surprised myself by producing an image every day of that month, which ranged from postcard-sized ink on paper drawings, A5 journal sketches, iPad and stylus drawings, acrylic on brown paper and graphite pencil sketches,” said Khoury.

It was from this one-month challenge that Khoury developed the drive to continue pushing her artistic boundaries for 365 days. She has called this new challenge the #365daychallenge. On 9 May, Khoury had already produced 208 pieces of art.

“There is something ritualistic about creating an image every day. It is a visual record of my days, as a diary might be, and is extremely personal as well as something made public,” she said.

Khoury has made use of social media to share her work and posts pictures of her pieces on Instagram and Facebook.

She explained that her daily drawings were a representation of her mood, state of mind and emotions. “My favourite artworks are those spontaneous creations without any expectations as I like to capture the spontaneity on the page,” continued Khoury.

“I hope to inspire others to take up the challenge. The wonderful thing about it is that you can start the challenge immediately. Let today be your #day1.”
