How to get around the Parkmore road closures

PARKMORE - Deputy Chairperson of the Parkmore Community Association offers motorists some tips on getting around with the new road closures.

With the Parkmore road closures now going into their second month of operation, deputy chairperson of the Parkmore Community Association, Kate Wardle has given commuters some tips on getting around in the area.

Wardle said, “A reminder, all 23 gates across the suburb are open during peak hours and this is every morning by 6am and closed again from 9.30am. They are then reopened at 3pm and closed from 7.30pm. On Saturdays, the hours are 8am to 1pm and the gates are then closed on Sundays and public holidays.”

As these times have been reasonably stringent, Wardle provided a few ways for non-Parkmore residents to move around the closures and take advantage of the five boom gates which are easily accessible.

  • Commuters travelling along Outspan Road or Coleraine Drive who need to reach William Nicol Drive can proceed through the boom gates on 13th street to reach Mattie Avenue which runs down to the William Nicol Drive intersection.
  • Motorists looking to get onto Marie Avenue and then onto Sandton Drive, coming from ‘central’ Parkmore or Riverclub side, can use 11th Street and then turn right onto Marie Avenue.
  • A similar route using 11th Street can be used by commuters travelling from Benmore or Grayston Drive.

“In addition, maps are now on each gate to assist motorists and flyers have been printed and distributed at local shops,” added Wardle.

She said that although it is too early to draw a clear picture of the gate’s effect on crime in the suburb, she added that some residents have reported that they are enjoying the quietness of the roads on a Sunday and allowing their children to cycle in the streets safely.
