Varsity College celebrates young heroes

SANDTON - Underprivileged boys receive a fun day of the roaring kind.

The student body of Varsity College Sandton brought fun into the lives of 20 young boys from the Phutaditjaba Community Centre, based in Alexandra, on 29 April.

As part of the college’s VC Heroes for a Day initiative, they took the elated boys to Lory Park Zoo for a fun-filled time.

Public relations and event co-ordinator at Varsity College Sandton, Oratile Matlapeng said, “‘VC Heroes for a Day is just one of Varsity College Sandton’s community engagement initiatives aimed at instilling a sense of good citizenship in its greater student body.

“The boys aged six and upwards were honoured for the courage they show in their challenging circumstances, which are, in some instances, being orphaned and vulnerable.”

Varsity College Sandton’s student relations manager, Vasanthee Govender said, “These young boys are so brave, they deserved a fun day out. The boys really fit into the true VC Heroes. The day was rewarding and selfless for the Varsity College Sandton students and staff members alike.”

The excursion, which included an educational talk on the animals, introduced the boys to a variety of animals such as tiger, leopard, chimpanzee and a few adorable lion cubs.

Govender added, “The boys had a great adventure and demonstrated their courage by ending their guided tour touching and petting some of the ‘dangerous’ ambassador animals. These included a 25-year-old owl, a bearded dragon, tortoise and a snake. After lunch, each boy was honoured with a gold hero medal for a great demonstration of their strength and courage.

“Varsity College enjoyed having these 20 boys over and were thrilled by their outstanding courage.”
