Fire erupts in Barbeque Downs

BARBEQUE DOWNS - A building in the Kyalami area has caught fire, with several explosions heard.

Several explosions were heard in the Barbeque Downs area shortly after 9pm on 10 May. Residents began tweeting photos of a building on fire.

Ward 112 councillor Candice James said the warehouse was situated just off Dytchley Road in Barbeque Downs, and Ward 93 councillor Annette Deppe believed the warehouse was used by a battery company.

By 10pm, both councillors said the fire was spreading to the next warehouse unit.

Deppe raised concern that an hour after the fire broke out, the fire trucks on scene did not have water to douse the flames. Just after 10pm James said Sandton Fire Station was on its way to the scene with the hydrant key, water tanker and air tankers.

Emergency services are on scene. The public is urged to stay away from the area until the fire has been extinguished.

This publication is in the process of obtaining comment from emergency services on the concerns raised regarding the capacity of the fire stations in the area to attend to the blaze timeously. Updates to follow as more information comes to light.
