Councillor keeps Ward 103 ticking

SANDTON - Vincent Earp is a ward councillor with a passion for social work.

Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp is a well-known face in his community and has been involved in social work for more than 20 years.

Before becoming a councillor in 2007, Earp was the headmaster of Wendywood High School and held this position for a decade before taking early retirement.

Earp has always been fond of helping out the community and after his career in education, took up the role as a councillor.

When asked about the key factors which make a good councillor, Earp responded, “I think one of the most important things I’ve learnt throughout the years as an educator is that good communication is key.”

“A problem doesn’t go away, and if you ignore it, it gets worse. You must have a passion for working with people.”

Earp added that he deals with old pupils and parents from his schooling days on a daily basis, and that this makes his connection with the residents of Ward 103 that much stronger.

He noted that the job does have its ups and downs. “I enjoy trying to help escalate and resolve issues on behalf of the community. I live in my ward, so I am quite aware of issues that permeate throughout the area. Being a councillor is a full-time job and I have received calls at three in the morning from residents experiencing major problems.”

Earp added that he always tries to empower the residents in his ward and encourages them to speak out about problems in their area. In addition, he believes in maintaining a good relationship with residents and city officials.

“One of the biggest issues is that we can only escalate problems, but if you build good relationships with the officials, you get more done.”

Earp is responsible for the following areas: Bryanston, Morningside, River Club, Duxberry, Sunset Acre, Benmore Gardens, Parkmore, Sandhurst, Hurl Park, Dalecross, Little Fillan, Sandown, parts of Strathavon and Bryanston.
