Ward 106 councillor Stephen Moore has been serving his community for nearly five years, starting his career in 2011.
During his term as councillor, Moore has made sure that his ward, one of the largest in northern Johannesburg, has remained one of the best-kept and well-functioning wards in the city.
Moore started out in the IT industry as a product manager but being a ward councillor has become his main focus. “What many people don’t realise about councillors is the fact that it is supposed to be a part-time job, but with our city as dysfunctional as it is, I don’t know how anyone would be able to manage all the responsibilities on a part-time basis,” he said
When asked about his greatest challenges as a councillor, Moore responded, “We have no authority to tell city officials what to do, we can only ask why things are not being done. We are legally prohibited from telling them what to do.”
He added that councillors have no control over budgets and if he could, he would like to prioritise certain projects. Moore encouraged residents to lodge applications for projects with the Integrated Development Plan.
It’s not all doom and gloom, though. “They did a survey in 2013 of all the wards in Gauteng and out of the 130 wards, mine was in the top three for the whole city. I am able to help with some of the bigger issues and because of that, I can see that I am making a difference.”
He added that projects such as the upgrade of the Petervale Clinic in 2012 had pleased him tremendously, but he admitted that losing some of the smaller battles could get very frustrating.
Ward 106 covers the following areas: Blanford Ridge AH, Blue Haven, Brecknock AH, Bryanston East, Bryanston Ext 16, Buccleuch, Craigavon AH, Douglasdale Ext 100, Fourways, Edenburg Ext 1, Gallo Manor, Jukskei Park, Khyber Rock, Klevehill Park, Lealholm AH, Lonehill, Magalies View AH, Magaliessig, Norscot Ext 1, Olivedale Ext 7, Palmlands AH, Paulshof, Petervale, Pine Slopes AH, Rivonia, Salfred AH, Sunninghill, The Woodlands Ext 1, Witkoppen Ext 116 and Woodmead.
