Raising awareness on climate change

JOBURG – Miss Earth South Africa Ambassadors portray the harsh reality of climate change

In an effort to raise awareness on climate change, Ella Bella and Catherine Constantinides together with the Miss Earth South Africa ambassadors, held a Climate Reality Breakfast.

The event, which took place at the Palazzo Hotel, highlighted the harsh realities of climate change which, according to Ella Bella, founder of Generation Earth, are very scary and real, with an undeniable impact on local and global businesses.

Bella said, “We often think that environmental issues and the challenges we face on the environmental sphere are only for government people and NGOs down on the grassroots level, but it’s really about activating conversation among all kinds of people in society… every person uses the environment and every person takes of the environment – we now have to say that every person has to give back in some kind of way.”

She explained that the first steps to giving back were to reuse, reduce, recycle and respect the environment. Bella added that it was vital that people understood that environmental work was not charity work, but the business of, “… natural resources, any product that you are creating, anything that you are producing. It is important to know that there are resources that came before, it is produced from something.”

She encouraged people to make better decisions when it came to considering the impact on the planet and to demand sustainable options when it came to their everyday life. She concluded, “We need to be more innovative with our ideas. There is so much more that can be done, from solar geysers to Jojo tanks and rain water harvesting. If we destroy creation, creation will destroy us.”
