Candice Kalil, a cosmetic chemist based in Sandton, said that those who are in search of beauty products need to look no further than the kitchen as beauty is best served natural.
Kalil explained that pomegranates, strawberries, honey, olive oil and other natural products have just as many beauty benefits as the expensive cosmetic products we buy.
She revealed that a quick and easy pomegranate exfoliating scrub can be made by combining ground pomegranate seeds, ground raw jungle oats, honey and buttermilk.
“The honey in the mixture is a natural antiseptic that can be used for more than just tea,” said Kalil.
According to Kalil, strawberry smoothies give mothers two for the price of one as they can be used as a vitamin C-rich, anti-aging face mask as well as a healthy snack for children. Mixing frozen strawberries, yogurt and honey makes a face mask which prevents skin cell damage and collagen breakdown.
“A honey mask is well worth the sticky mess as it will work as a powerful moisturiser,” said Kalil. She also explained that honey can be warmed over a small pot and then generously applied to the face.
Of all of the natural products, olive oil is Kalil’s favourite as it is an anti-oxidant which is beneficial for the skin. Research has shown that olive oil prevents the visible signs of aging which includes wrinkles.
Olive oil can be easily applied directly onto the skin then wiped off with a cloth.
Kalil added, “If one is pressured for time and does not have natural ingredients, especially because certain fruits are going out of season, one can use natural beauty products such as Celltone Tissue Oil.”
Lastly, Kalil recommended that one must look for products which are rich in grapeseed oil, lavender oil, lime oil and avocado oil.
