Good deeds never go unnoticed

JOBURG - Oscar von Memerty has become well-known for his role on MTV as a prankster in You Got Got.

His budding success and larger-than-life personality often make us forget that he suffers from a rare disease called MP6. This disease has stunted Von Memerty’s growth and he is only 117cm in height at the age of 20. He has also had to undergo bone marrow transplants to prevent the worsening of the disease.

After reading about Bryanston High School’s Jeans for Genes fundraiser in the article, Jeans for Genes, week ending 18 March, Von Memerty felt the need to thank the pupils. This fundraiser took place on 29 February and the Bryanston High School pupils wore jeans to school to raise awareness for rare diseases. They managed to raise R9 000.

Von Memerty said the pupils’ act of kindness was not only giving a rare disease patient a chance for a better future but was also setting an example and influencing, not only young people but all people of all ages. He added that we all needed to join the rare disease movement so that we could all contribute and save even more lives.

Von Memerty spent a large portion of his teenage life motivating students and creating awareness of rare diseases. He said nothing made him happier than seeing how many people of all ages were working together to raise funds and create awareness.
