Painting the country purple

RIVONIA - Ahead of International Purple Day for Epilepsy on 26 March, a group of organisations and residents took part in a walk for epilepsy awareness.

The day was attended with infectious enthusiasm by members of the community coming together in support.

A representative from the Reea foundation, a non-profit organisation giving care to adults suffering epilepsy, Daniella Alexander said, “Purple Day for Epilepsy is held each year on 26 March and is a day dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy. People from around the world wear purple and increase awareness, reduce stigma and empower individuals living with epilepsy. Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, affecting 1 in 100 people in South Africa and 50 million people worldwide.”

She added that despite its prevalence, the condition was often misunderstood and people with epilepsy continued to face social stigma and discrimination.

The morning was supported by a variety of organisations including the Metro police, who led the march, along with biker group Assault Ryderz. The walk began at Sandton City and moved along Rivonia Road to the Mercedes-Benz dealership in Sandton with all participants dressed in bright purple.

Epilepsy Awareness South Africa founding member Linda Diaz said, “I found the morning a humbling experience and was thrilled by the amazing turnout for our first epilepsy awareness walk in South Africa… since then we have been getting e-mails, Twitter and Facebook messages from people affected with epilepsy, and we want to encourage people to join our support group. Our intention is to raise awareness, raise funds and educate schools.”
