Buccleuch resident frustrated by Eskom woes

BUCCLEUCH – A Buccleuch resident was left frustrated and angry following a dispute with Eskom over his disconnected meter.

The resident, Tshepang Mongwe, explained that the trouble started in January when contractors from the utility arrived at his property to do their usual meter reading.

“The contractors then said my account was in arrears and that I owed R2 500 before proceeding to disconnect my electricity and padlock my meter,” Mongwe said.

“I find this strange, because my Eskom account is well in credit and has been so since the beginning of February following a payment of R30 000 in advance for the account.”

A frustrated Mongwe added that, following the disconnection, he tried contacting the utility’s call centre to try and resolve the issue, to no avail.

He was then referred to the Eskom’s head office in Rivonia, and it was then that he was informed that there was no issue with his power and that, on their system, it had never been disconnected.

“Despite assuring me that contractors would be sent to investigate, I spent over a month without electricity, which I find unacceptable,” Mongwe said.

In response, the power utility refuted Mongwe’s allegations, explaining that no disconnection on the meter took place this year.

“The customer [Mongwe] was disconnected and reconnected in November last year, according to our records, but he alleges that it was disconnected in January this year,” Eskom said.

“He then paid… R30 000 [before] reconnecting the power back himself, so when meter readers came to read the meter, they took the cables and locked the box.”

Eskom further questioned Mongwe’s colossal payment when he only owed the entity R1 580, but confirmed that field services had since replaced the cable and reconnected the supply.
