City Power MD Sicelo Xulu exonerated from litany of allegations

JOBURG - City Power managing director Sicelo Xulu has been exonerated by the power utility's board from allegations of impropriety made by the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu).

Yumna Sheik, spokesperson for City Power, said last year Samwu had threatened to go on strike demanding that the board suspend Xulu, pending investigations into a litany of allegations. The accusations ranged from alleged improper conduct to flouting of procurement processes and recruitment practices.

“The City Power board undertook its own internal investigation to consider the legitimacy of the serious allegations that had been levelled against Xulu,” said Sheik.

“A participatory process was undertaken in dealing with this matter and Samwu were invited to contribute relevant information for consideration in the process. After having considered all available information and the independent legal advice received, the board concluded that there is no substance to the allegations levelled against the City Power managing director.”

Chairperson of City Power’s board Frank Chikane said, “I wish to implore people to refrain from making damning allegations that cannot be substantiated as they tarnish the reputation of those who are accused and cast aspersions on their credibility and integrity.”

He added that the board was pleased and relieved that Xulu has been cleared of all the allegations directed at him, and he was now free to focus his energies on delivering on his mandate of keeping the lights on for the residents of Johannesburg, and delivering superior customer service to the residents and businesses in the city.
