Police warn of robberies outside Sandton Gautrain Station

SANDTON – Sandton police officers are urging travellers who use the Sandton Gautrain station to remain cautious when entering or leaving.

This warning follows a number of armed robberies which have allegedly taken place just outside the station. According to Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for Sandton Police Station, robbers are allegedly targeting people as they leave or enter the station.

“These thieves steal people’s valuables including jewellery, rings and their belongings,” Maphakela said.

Kesagee Nayager, spokesperson for the Gautrain added to this, explaining that while security personnel had no jurisdiction to police outside the station, Gautrain fully supported the local police and Metro police with their crime prevention operations.

“The safety and well-being of our commuters is of paramount importance to us and we make every effort to ensure that our commuters remain safe whilst at our stations,” Nayager added.

“[We also urge] commuters [to] remain vigilant whilst at the stations and on their respective journeys once departed from the station.”

Maphakela concluded by stressing that the police were doing their best to monitor the areas and ensure arrests are made promptly.
