The statement condemns the illegal strike action which has taken the form of sit-ins at depots and disruptions in the Joburg CBD.
“The JRA Board and Management are aware of the grievances raised by SAMWU and are addressing these through appropriate internal channels,” the statement reads.
JRA said that some of the matters raised have been demonstrated to require City level resolution.
“The JRA cannot act unilaterally on these matters and they are subject to the City of Johannesburg processes. However, where matters are well within the JRA’s jurisdiction, the negotiation process will be reconstituted, and we will work hard to resolve such matters,” said Mpho Kau, acting managing director of the roads agency.
“We have created an environment that is conducive to progressive engagements within the JRA and Management are committed to resolving the issues amicably,” he explained. “In the interim, contingency plans have been activated to deal with service delivery aspects and we implore employees to resume their core duties and allow the process to conclude and reiterate that the “no work, no pay” principle will apply.”
Kau went on to say the community should take note that the roads agency’s ability to attend to road related issues and faulty traffic signals reported within the agreed Customer Service time-frames is currently compromised.
“To this end we thank the community for their patience and understanding until final resolution on the illegal strike can be reached. All CAPEX infrastructure projects including the M1 Freeway bridges rehabilitation projects will continue as planned, without interruption,” he concluded.
