Ignition project gives hope to Alex pupils

ALEXANDRA – The Ignition project is in need of mentors and funding as it prepares for its 2016 intake of pupils.

The project, based in Alexandra, is an initiative by social outreach organisation, Rays of Hope, and is focused on providing pupils with the necessary assistance to help them get employment.

Sarah van Zyl, Ignition’s project leader, explained how the project helped pupils. “The Ignition is not a quick-fix exercise; we work with our students for a number of years, ensuring that they are well-equipped to find full-time employment,” she explained.

She added that the programme was multi-faceted and offered coaching for pupils from matric onwards by assisting them in selecting the area of study best suited to their skills, interests and aptitudes. Furthermore, as part of the project, an all-day training seminar was held for 12 pupils in this endeavour.

“Ignition does its best to facilitate funding for the student to allow for further study [and] once this is in place, we keep abreast of each student’s academic progress,” she said.

The Ignition programme is focused on helping matriculants from Alex to find employment by providing loans for studying or technical training. The project fills the gap for pupils who do not qualify for scholarships or bursaries and have no access to student loans.
