The relief project has called on urban residents to supply grass by dropping it off at various drop-off points in the country. With a number of collection stations at various places around the country, the closest one for the Sandton community is at Kitchen Concepts, a cooking school in Bryanston.
To make sure that the process of grass collection for the organisation goes smoothly, they have issued a list of do’s and don’ts to assist community members:
- Increase air circulation prior to transport to drop-off sites by spreading out the grass in thin layers and in small piles to be turned regularly. This will save the organisation time and help with processing.
- Do not immediately put the cut grass in plastic bags unless the grass will be dropped off the same day at the collection station.
- Do not leave closed plastic bags with freshly cut grass in the sun or out in the heat as this may lead to fermentation of the grass.
- Woven or net bags are ideal to use for the grass unless the grass is being dropped off on the same day, then plastic bags may be used.
- Make sure that all domestic pet faeces is removed from the area before cutting the grass because pet faeces can contaminate animal feed and increase the risk of parasite transmission.
