Work to resume on M1 Bridge

SANDTON - Following the commencement of an enquiry to investigate the collapse of the support structure of the Grayston Drive Bridge on 16 February, construction company Murray & Roberts have been granted provisional permission to resume work on the area where the bridge collapsed.

The collapse took the lives of two people on 14 October last year.

The area of the accident has been sealed off from work since October with a prohibition notice insuring that no further work would be done until preliminary investigations looking into the cause of the collapse has been completed. According to reports a site inspection was held on 17 February.

According to reports there have been strict condition placed by the Department of Labour in order for work to resume including the presentation of a risk assessment and safety plans along with Murray & Robert’s methods of implementing these plans.

The initial incident occurred at 3.30pm on 14 October when a scaffolding bridge that ran over the M1 highway along Grayston Drive suddenly collapsed. Two drivers were killed and 19 injured. It has led to an initial inquiry beginning this week at the Parktonian Hotel in Braamfontein.

The inquiry will resume in April.
