#CityMustFall after Joburg fails to pay learners

JOHANNESBURG – Protest action ensued in Newtown on 17 February, as youngsters marched against The City of Joburg.

A group of unhappy men and women assembled outside Museum Africa in Newtown, holding signs expressing their ire.

This follows a number of learnership programmes that were allegedly facilitated by the city, for which the learners were not paid.

“We are young people from Region F and Region B,” an anonymous speaker said.

“We were called for a learnership which started in November by the City of Joburg. We signed contracts that stated we would be paid on the 15th [of November] and when we went to the banks for our money, there was nothing. Now it has been three months and the City of Johannesburg is not helping us. They are calling secret meetings, so now we are saying that #CityMustFall.”

The protesters alleged that there were two more payouts that were scheduled, all totalling R7 500, to be received by the group at later dates but they were not received either.

The protesters made their way from their starting point in Newtown to the office of the City of Joburg in Braamfontein.

The City of Joburg was unavailable to give comment at this time.
