WATCH OUT: Sandton police warn residents about driveway robbers

SANDTON – Sandton police officers recently spoke out against driveway robbers who threaten residents in the area.

This after a number of reports of armed robbery incidents which took place on numerous driveways in Riverclub and Bryanston.

“Be vigilant,” said Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for Sandton Police Station.

“Keep your eyes open when driving from and to the mall. Look out to see if there is a car which has followed you.”

Maphakela said that if residents suspect they are being followed, they should not drive to their place of residence. “Rather drive to the police station, a garage or a place of safety,” Maphakela said.

He also suggested that residents who feel they are being followed must call a police station and report the vehicle and provide the number plate.

“We have found out that these driveway robbers mainly target residents who are going [driving] back home from shopping at the malls,” he explained.

“They trap you while you are in the driveway of your home. They are usually dressed in balaclavas and carry firearms.”

He advised drivers to make sure they have the gate remote in the front of the vehicle, in reachable distance, so they do not need to stop their car in the driveway to get the remote out of the car boot or their bag. Maphakela also said residents need to make sure that they enter their home quickly and must make sure their gates are closed and locked behind them.

“We are committed to finding the driveway robbers and we have police officers monitoring the areas of concern,” said Maphakela. The areas of concern comprise Woodmead, Benmore, Sandton CBD and Bryanston.

Anyone with information regarding the driveway robbers who are disturbing the areas is urged to contact the police.
