Wearing blue for CHOC

SANDTON - As a testament to the sufferers of cancer and their families, 15 February will see the whole world celebrate International Childhood Cancer Day.

The CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation urges all to take part in this day by raising awareness of cancer and wearing blue to show their support.

Spokesperson of the organisation, Zelda Zukiswa Jacobs said, “This day was started as a global collaborative campaign to raise awareness about childhood cancer and to express support for children with cancer, survivors and their families.

“In developed countries, childhood cancer has become largely curable with the overall survival rate reaching between 70 percent and 80 percent; whereas in South Africa, the rate is only at about 50 percent. CHOC aims to ensure that more children in South Africa are cured and that the survival rate increases.”

In support of the special day, communities are urged to wear blue with their CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation badge on 15 February along with thousands of others.

Jacobs said, “Blue pants, blue shirts, blue suits, blue dresses, blue ribbons, anything blue. It will all help in the effort to spread the message.”

Members of the community can e-mail bdu@choc.org.za to order a badge which will cost R10.
